U.S. invites Putin to December's G20 summit in Miami

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed to reporters that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to attend the G20 summit, set to take place December 14–15 in Miami.

Rubio suggested that such a meeting could serve as a starting point or platform for reaching a broader agreement between the parties involved.

Rubio explains the reasoning

Defending the decision to extend the invitation, Rubio said the Trump administration hopes Putin will accept. He argued that in international relations, it is often necessary for parties in disagreement to sit down and talk with one another.

Energy ceasefire question

When asked whether Moscow might be interested in a ceasefire limited to the energy sector, Rubio acknowledged that such a step would not end the war outright. However, he said it could potentially ease some of the broader global pressures currently being felt as a result of the conflict.

No official response from Moscow regarding the invitation has been reported so far.
