A shooting at an elementary school in the city of Bend, in the US state of Oregon, on Thursday killed three children and one adult, US media reported. Police said the attacker was also shot dead.

How events unfolded

A spokeswoman for the Bend Police Department said officers were first told about a shot fired in a car. Soon afterwards, emergency calls began arriving about an active shooter at the school. Police reached the scene within minutes, and shortly afterwards a radio message said the gunman had been shot and killed. Police did not yet know who had shot the attacker.

Police later confirmed that children were among the victims and said at least two people had been taken to a local hospital, with their condition unknown at that time.

Victims and the attacker

Citing law enforcement sources, the television networks CNN and CBS first reported that four people had been shot dead: three children and one adult. Police later confirmed that the gunman killed three children aged five, eight and 11, as well as a teacher.

CNN reported that the attack was carried out by a 16-year-old teenager, but police had not yet confirmed this detail.
