The United States is sending roughly 40 Marines to the Baltic Sea region to reinforce NATO's Baltic Sentry mission, which aims to protect critical undersea infrastructure. The move was confirmed by the Pentagon.

According to the announcement, the Marines deployed to the region will operate alongside Finnish units. Their main task will be monitoring the maritime situation and conducting tactical reconnaissance. The unit will use drones and coastal sensors, with the data collected feeding into NATO's shared operational system, allowing allies to receive information about potential threats more quickly.

General Daniel Shipley, commander of US Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa, said participation in the Baltic Sentry mission demonstrates that the US is able to rapidly deploy specialized units to regions where they are most needed.

Mission's purpose

The Baltic Sentry mission is intended to strengthen security in the Baltic Sea region and protect critical undersea infrastructure. NATO member states participating in the mission coordinate their actions through the joint command in Brunssum, the Netherlands. The US Marines will provide additional support and the necessary capability for the mission.

The Baltic Sentry mission was established in 2025 following a series of incidents in which critical undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea was damaged.
