US military opens fire on cargo ship near Iran blockade

US forces fired from a helicopter at the engine room of the Panama-flagged cargo vessel Vela Nova, saying it tried to breach a blockade against Iran, as diplomacy between Washington and Tehran remains stalled.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed that one of its helicopters fired at the engine room of a Panama-flagged cargo vessel named Vela Nova. According to CENTCOM, the ship was attempting to break through a blockade the United States has imposed against Iran.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of continued deadlock in diplomatic relations between Washington and Tehran. Talks between the two countries over contested issues have failed to produce progress, and tensions in the region remain elevated.

CENTCOM confirmed the incident took place but has not yet released further details about the vessel's crew, cargo, or the extent of damage caused by the strike. It also remains unclear whether anyone aboard was injured.

The episode underscores that the US continues to actively enforce maritime blockade measures against Iran, using military force against vessels it believes are attempting to circumvent them. The situation reflects ongoing regional tension as a diplomatic resolution between Washington and Tehran remains elusive.
