US faces 18 October deadline on new Russia sanctions, with Kyiv prioritizing Starlink-rival suppliers
Washington has until 18 October to decide whether to impose new sanctions on Russia, and Ukraine has submitted a wish list of targets topped by firms supplying components for Moscow's homegrown rival to Starlink.
The United States has set an 18 October deadline for deciding whether to introduce additional sanctions against Russia, though it remains uncertain whether any new measures will ultimately be adopted. Amid this uncertainty, Ukrainian officials have put forward their own list of preferred sanctions targets for Washington to consider.
Starlink-rival suppliers top the list
At the top of Kyiv's proposal are Russian companies that manufacture components for Moscow's domestically developed satellite communications system, which is viewed as a rival to the Starlink network operated by the US company SpaceX. These firms have so far escaped US sanctions despite their ties to Russia's technological and military infrastructure.
The satellite system these companies help build could play a role in Russia's ability to maintain communications in remote or conflict areas, including potential uses connected to the war in Ukraine.
It is not yet clear whether the US administration will act on Kyiv's recommendations and expand its sanctions list. With the 18 October deadline approaching, the coming weeks will show how Washington responds to Ukraine's submitted list and whether new restrictions will be placed on the named Russian firms.
