US pull off dramatic comeback to retain Presidents Cup

The United States golf team staged a remarkable final-day turnaround to defeat the Internationals and retain the Presidents Cup at Medinah.

Entering Sunday's singles session three points behind, the American side — featuring eight of the world's top 11 ranked players — was fighting to avoid only its second defeat since the biennial event began 32 years ago. A dominant singles performance, winning nine of 12 matches, sealed a final 17-13 victory.

The decisive point came from Jacob Bridgeman, who sank a four-foot par putt on the 18th hole to edge past Australia's Min Woo Lee one-up. Further wins came from Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Chris Gotterup, Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele and Jackson Koivun.

Reaction from the captains

US captain Brandt Snedeker, who was on the losing US Ryder Cup team at the same venue in 2012, said he had reminded his players beforehand that Medinah has a history of unexpected outcomes, praising the team's fighting spirit and unity.

International captain Geoff Ogilvy said the American team had come out aggressively as expected, and that the contest remained finely balanced throughout the day — noting that a handful of matches which ended one down for his side could easily have swung the other way and shifted momentum.

US President Donald Trump attended the event in his role as honorary chairman, greeting players and delivering a speech before play began.
