Arthur Fils breaks into ATP Top 10 for the first time — becomes 13th Frenchman on exclusive list
French player Arthur Fils, 22, entered the ATP Top 10 for the first time in his career on Monday, September 28, climbing to world No. 9. He is only the 13th Frenchman since 1973 to reach this level, though the achievement comes despite a poor Grand Slam record and amid an administrative mix-up ahead of the Tokyo tournament.
A historic step for French tennis
In the ATP rankings published on September 28, Arthur Fils (22) entered the Top 10 for the first time in his career, moving up to No. 9 with 3,150 points — a gain of two spots, according to Orange Sports. He became the 13th Frenchman since the ATP ranking system began in 1973 to reach this level, and the first since Gaël Monfils in September 2020 — a six-year gap unseen in French men's tennis since the early 1980s, notes Eurosport. Yannick Noah leads the all-time French list with 275 weeks in the Top 10 since 1982, followed by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (260 weeks) and Richard Gasquet (146 weeks, the youngest entrant at 21). At 22, Fils is among the youngest Frenchmen to reach the Top 10 — exactly the age Noah was when he first broke in back in 1982.
A paradox: a top ranking without Grand Slam success
As Eurosport points out, Fils reached the Top 10 with a surprisingly weak Grand Slam record — he has won just a single match across his last four majors, and those tournaments account for only 50 of his 3,150 points, roughly 1.6% of his total. By comparison, other Top 10 players draw far more from Grand Slams: 25.9% for Jannik Sinner and as much as 63.3% for Alexander Zverev. At the same time, French men's tennis as a whole has gone almost five years without reaching a Grand Slam quarterfinal. It's a different story at Masters 1000 level, however, where French players have enjoyed a run of success over the past two years, including Fils's own title — France's first Masters 1000 crown in over a decade — plus runner-up finishes for Arthur Rinderknech (Shanghai, 2025) and Ugo Humbert (Paris-Bercy, 2024).
Administrative mix-up ahead of Tokyo
Despite his new ranking, Fils is forced to play qualifying at the ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo this week due to an administrative error in his entry, reports Puntodebreak. He won his opening qualifying match against Martin Damm 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 and now needs one more win, against the winner of Lorenzo Sonego and Kamil Majchrzak, to reach the main draw. Should he qualify, Fils could face a formidable first-round opponent — Taylor Fritz, Rafael Jódar, Tomás Etcheverry or Luca Van Assche. A potential rematch with Jódar would be especially notable, as the Spaniard has already beaten Fils twice this season, in Washington and in the Montreal Masters 1000 quarterfinal.
The new rankings also saw 25-year-old Kyrian Jacquet crack the Top 100 for the first time, climbing to No. 86 (+21 places).
