At least eight people, including four children, were shot and injured during the US Independence Day holiday in New York City's Coney Island neighborhood, ABC News reported on Sunday, citing the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

Police officers responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 10:37 pm on Sunday on West 31st Street in the Brooklyn neighborhood, according to a statement from the NYPD to ABC News.

Among the injured were two men, two women, and four children aged 14, 12, 7 and 6, the news outlet reported, quoting the NYPD. All victims were taken to hospitals, with seven in stable condition and a 21-year-old woman in critical condition.

Police recovered a firearm at the scene but have not made any arrests, ABC reported. The NYPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
