This week marks 65 years since the Hollywood romantic film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” reached cinema screens. Directed by Blake Edwards, the film premiered in 1961. Over the decades, Holly Golightly, played by actress Audrey Hepburn, has become one of the most recognisable characters in film history.

The story

The film centres on Paul, a young writer who moves into a new apartment in New York and gets to know his neighbour Holly. Paul soon becomes attached to the unpredictable woman, who is defined by an extravagant lifestyle and a wish to stay free – to belong to no one and therefore not to fall in love. The leading roles are played by Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard.

The film is based on the novella of the same name by American writer Truman Capote, published in 1958.

Success and influence

The film was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two Oscars: for best original score and for best original song, “Moon River”. The music for the song was written by Henry Mancini.

Its influence has reached beyond cinema: Hepburn’s black dress, pearl jewellery, high hairstyle and the scene at the window of the jeweller “Tiffany & Co.” have become part of popular culture. More than six decades after its release, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is still regarded as one of the best-known Hollywood films of the 20th century.

To mark the anniversary, the Latvian outlet Jauns.lv has also prepared a roundup of lesser-known facts about the film.
