Apple's phone trade-in program still pays for a 2017 iPhone 8

Apple's Trade In program still offers credit for devices as old as the 2017 iPhone 8, though amounts are modest. The company also accepts other Apple products and select Android phones, though third-party buyers often pay more.

Apple's Trade In program lets customers apply credit from an old device toward a new purchase, and the oldest iPhone still eligible for any value is the iPhone 8, released in 2017. A device in good condition — meaning only minor scratches or dents — earns just $35. Damaged phones may qualify for less or nothing at all, depending on the specific issues reported.

Other 2017 models fare slightly better: the iPhone 8 Plus is worth up to $40 in good condition, while the iPhone X can bring up to $60. Apple's trade-in list technically extends back to the iPhone 5, but those older devices no longer qualify for any credit and are simply recycled instead.

Newer devices and other products

The highest current trade-in value belongs to the iPhone 16 Pro Max, at up to $720, though trading in such a recent phone soon after purchase offers little financial benefit. Beyond iPhones, Apple also accepts iPads (up to $690), Macs (up to $2,045) and Apple Watches (up to $305). Select Android devices from Samsung, Google, OnePlus and Huawei are eligible too, though typically for lower amounts, and storage capacity factors into their valuation unlike with iPhones.

How the process works

Customers can trade in a device either when buying a new one online or in an Apple Store, or exchange it for an Apple gift card without a new purchase. Paying in full results in credit applied after the old device is verified, while financing a purchase reduces monthly payments instead. For those seeking better value, third-party services such as Mac Me An Offer sometimes pay more than Apple, and marketplaces like eBay or Facebook Marketplace can yield even higher returns, though with more effort involved.
