New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 36, revealed over the weekend via a series of Instagram stories that she is freezing her eggs and intends to document the process publicly.
"This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life," she said, adding that she had been saving for the procedure for a long time and that women considering it often lack accessible information.
Women's health awareness
Ocasio-Cortez said women are generally not taught enough about their own bodies — whether regarding puberty, pregnancy, perimenopause or menopause. She showed followers the medications and tools involved, including syringes and alcohol wipes, explaining that the process involves injecting multiple medications over roughly 10 days or more.
Ahead of a scheduled ABC interview on Sunday, she filmed herself preparing an injection in the dressing room, saying she wanted to show that women can manage medical procedures alongside demanding careers. She injected herself on camera and remarked that it "wasn't so bad," while joking about the idea of an ASMR-style channel for the process.
Political context
During her ABC interview, Ocasio-Cortez linked her decision to the broader political climate, saying the current administration has restricted women's access to reproductive care, including abortion rights and safe pregnancy options. She argued it is important for leaders to speak openly about such processes to normalize them, particularly for working women.
Her announcement drew praise from several Democratic figures on social media, who commended her openness about a topic they said is rarely discussed publicly.
