Anthropic's CEO to Dine with President Trump Tonight

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has had a highly visible weekend — first appearing as the target of a sketch on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, and now preparing for his first-ever one-on-one meeting with President Donald Trump, set to take place over dinner at the White House tonight.

Axios was first to report the planned dinner, and the news has since been confirmed by other outlets. The meeting marks a notable moment given that the two men have recently landed on opposite sides of the debate over AI safety.

Diverging views on AI

Amodei recently put forward a plan calling for slowing the pace of AI development, or at least proceeding with greater caution. Trump, by contrast, has claimed without evidence that public backlash against AI is a hoax manufactured by Democrats, and has expressed a preference for rebranding the technology as "super intelligence."

A history of tension

Even before this disagreement, Amodei and Anthropic have had a strained relationship with the Trump administration. Earlier this year, the Pentagon labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk after the company sought to impose guardrails on how its technology is used — a designation Anthropic is currently contesting in court. Still, some other officials within the administration have taken a friendlier stance toward the company.
