Analyst: US midterms will test Trump, while French parties with clear candidates lead polls

Geopolitical analyst Hind Ziane discussed why the upcoming US midterm elections and France's presidential election are among the most anticipated political events of the coming year. She said the midterms will be a real test for President Trump, while in France parties with clearly designated presidential candidates currently lead opinion polls.

As France 24 launched its new season of programmes, its show "Perspective" looked ahead to two of the most anticipated political events of the coming year: the United States midterm elections, due in two months, and the French presidential election, expected in just over six months.

The programme featured geopolitical analyst, entrepreneur and international speaker Hind Ziane, who shared her assessment of both contests.

Midterms seen as a test for Trump

According to Ziane, the US midterm elections will serve as a genuine test for President Donald Trump. Midterm elections are traditionally viewed as a gauge of public sentiment toward the sitting administration partway through a presidential term.

French parties with named candidates dominate polls

On the French political landscape, Ziane noted that opinion polls are currently dominated by parties that have already put forward clear presidential candidates. France's presidential election is set to take place in just over six months.

Both votes — the US midterms and the French presidential race — are regarded as two of the most closely watched political milestones of the year ahead, with the potential to shape the political direction of both countries.
