A serious aviation accident unfolded at Miami International Airport on Sunday when an Amazon Prime Air cargo aircraft, operating Flight 7598 from Puerto Rico, overran the runway, collided with several vehicles and caught fire. The plane came to a stop near the northwest end of the airport.

US authorities confirmed that five people died in the incident, while another five were injured. The Boeing 767-300 cargo jet had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan and ran off the runway at around 2 p.m. local time.

Complex fire response

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews arriving at the scene found the aircraft engulfed in flames, with heavy smoke stemming from a complex engine fire. Roughly 200 emergency personnel took part in the response effort.

All runways and taxiways at the airport were closed and a ground stop was put in place while the disabled aircraft was assessed. Officials stated that the incident posed no broader threat to public safety.

The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation into the cause of the crash. Amazon said it is supporting those affected by the incident and will cooperate fully with investigators.
