Student protests against the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama are continuing for a third day in Albania, a country in southeastern Europe. In some cities the demonstrations have escalated into riots. The protesters demand that Rama step down, while the prime minister has said he does not intend to resign under pressure.

Police response

According to the media outlet Aktualna Kamera, police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse demonstrators. Dozens of people were detained.

Students' demands

The students are calling for Rama's resignation and claim that under the current authorities the country lacks proper conditions for studying.

The prime minister's response

Rama accused other forces of standing behind the organisers of the protests. In his words, these are forces that try to pull Albania backwards every time the country moves forward. He said they are the opposition, which, hiding its face behind masks and waving fire and iron, wants to return Albania to the past. Rama stated that Albania will not go back there.

The protests have now lasted three days, and the source does not say how the situation may develop further.
