airBaltic shifts course: smaller fleet, new financing needed

Latvia's national airline airBaltic has announced a significant change of direction in its development strategy. Where the company previously planned to rapidly grow its fleet, the new business plan takes the opposite approach — the number of aircraft is now set to shrink rather than expand.

Focus on profitable routes

The new approach centers on concentrating resources on the flight routes that generate the most profit, rather than pursuing the broadest possible network of destinations. Riga Airport will remain airBaltic's main base, around which its operations will continue to be built.

New financing required

Alongside the smaller fleet, the airline also faces a financing challenge — airBaltic needs hundreds of millions of euros in new capital. It is not yet known exactly how much funding will be raised or from which sources.

The shift from an aggressive growth model to a more cautious, profitability-driven approach suggests the airline is reassessing its earlier plans in light of current conditions. Scaling back the fleet, after previously promising rapid expansion, marks a notable change in the company's stated direction.
