2026 Perseid Meteor Shower Peak to Coincide With Unusually Dark Skies
The Perseid meteor shower will peak on the night of August 12–13, and this year's new moon phase will provide exceptionally dark skies for viewing. NASA and ESA have shared practical tips for making the most of the display.

August brings not only dramatic solar eclipses but also one of the year's most spectacular meteor showers, the Perseids. On the night of August 12 into the early hours of August 13, skywatchers across the northern hemisphere and parts of the southern hemisphere will have a particularly good opportunity to observe the event.
Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through trails of debris left behind by comets. As these small particles enter the atmosphere, friction causes them to burn up, creating bright streaks of light across the sky. The Perseids rank among the three most intense annual meteor showers, alongside the Geminids in December and the Quadrantids in January, reaching up to 100 meteors per hour at peak activity under ideal conditions.
Why This Year's Viewing Is Especially Favorable
In 2026, the shower's peak coincides with the new moon, meaning almost none of the moon's illuminated side will be visible from Earth. Without moonlight interference, the night sky will be considerably darker than usual, improving the chances of spotting fainter meteors.
Tips for the Best Viewing Experience
NASA and the European Space Agency recommend getting away from light pollution by heading to a dark location with an unobstructed horizon. Human eyes take 20 to 30 minutes to fully adjust to darkness, so it's best to avoid phones or other bright screens during that time.
Both agencies advise against using telescopes or binoculars, since these narrow the field of view while meteors can appear anywhere in the sky. There's no need to look specifically toward the constellation Perseus, from which the meteors appear to radiate — instead, lying down or using a reclining chair to take in a wide view of the sky, ideally after midnight, offers better results.
Finally, NASA and ESA note that patience matters, since meteors don't appear at a steady pace. Spending at least an hour under dark skies gives the best chance of enjoying the show.
