More than 25,000 voters already cast ballots for safekeeping

On Monday, September 28, more than 25,000 voters in Latvia took the opportunity to deposit their ballots for safekeeping ahead of the 15th Saeima elections, according to data compiled by the Central Election Commission (CVK).

The 15th Saeima elections will take place on Saturday, October 3. Voting for safekeeping is one of the ways voters who will be unable to reach their designated polling station on election day can cast their vote in advance — by depositing a sealed ballot envelope for safekeeping at a chosen polling station ahead of election day.

The CVK's data on voting for safekeeping is updated daily, allowing observers to track voter activity even before the main election day. The exact total number of voters who choose this voting method will only become clear once the election process concludes and all voting methods are summed — including voting on election day itself, early voting, and voting for safekeeping.

This option is relevant to a significant share of voters who may find it difficult to reach their polling station on election day itself, whether for work, health or other reasons. The figure reported so far — more than 25,000 — shows that interest in this form of voting is already noticeable early in election week.
